Everything is Cinema

"A film is - or should be - more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what's behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later." - Stanley Kubrick

    Jules et Jim (1962)
- Francois Trauffant
Great film, indicative of the whole Nouvelle Vague movement. Loved it, but still a Godard man.

Just saw this, and it is amazing. Reminds me a bit of what I love about cinema. Also the first time I have appreciated the use of 3D.

    Oscar Predictions

Everyone is making their list, so I thought id do mine. Predicted winners are in bold. Some categories I haven’t made a prediction because I either haven’t seen the films, or I just dont care enough about the category. I havent seen some of the films in major categories so some roles and films have been overlooked.

    Michel Hazanavicius – The Artist

    or Martin Scorsese - Hugo

Best Cinematography The Tree of Life – Emmanuel Lubezki

Best Costume Design Hugo – Sandy Powell

    Best Film Editing

This isnt a category I dont care about at all or havent seen any of the films, i just cant decide.

Best Visual Effects Rise of the Planet of the Apes – Joe Letteri, Dan Lemmon, R. Christopher White, and Daniel Barrett

Firstly, its disgusting that Transformers has been nominated for anything.

My best picture choice was The Artist for several reasons, it was an amazing, captivating film, presenting silent films to an audience that has no appreciation for them. The Artist’s success is gives hope that good films still have a chance to reach large audiences, make money, and that they are actually made. Additionally, there is nothing Hollywood loves more than being praised, and I believe it will reward The Artist and Hugo heavily for doing so.

The documentary category is a joke. If Senna, one of the best documentaries I have seen, and one of the best films of 2011, isnt even nominated, I dont think the list has been considered properly.

    Rear Window (1954)
- Alfred Hitchcock
“My good luck in life was to be a really frightened person. I’m fortunate to be a coward, to have a low threshold of fear, because a hero couldn’t make a good suspense film.” - Alfred Hitchcock

    Look Around (2012)

    - Red Hot Chili Peppers

A very interesting way to do a music video. Not sure that I want music videos, or films to be remotely interactive, ever, but i do think this is an amazing experiment and a very good music video. I still feel that music videos should move towards the short film format, but this is original, and that is always good (especially for music videos).

    God of Love (2010)
- Luke Matheny
The best part of this short film is its simplicity. It is brilliant.

    Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)

Not so much a spy film as a film about people not trusting each other.
